Summer is finally here in the Miami Valley—and if you’re anything like me, you’re ready to soak up a little sunshine, enjoy time outside, and maybe even sneak in a walk or two by the water.
But while we’re enjoying all that sunshine, it’s important to remember that our skin needs a little extra care this time of year—especially as we get older.
Why Skin Care Matters More Than Ever
As we age, our skin naturally becomes thinner and more sensitive to the sun. That means we can burn more easily, and long-term sun exposure can increase the risk of skin damage and even skin cancer.
Now, I’m not here to scare you—I just want to gently remind you (like I would a friend or neighbor
) that a few simple habits can go a long way:
- Wear a good sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
- Use a wide-brimmed hat when you’re out for longer periods
- Stay hydrated (your skin loves water just as much as the rest of you!)
- Try to avoid peak sun hours when possible
What Does Medicare Cover?
This is where I get to put my “Medicare hat” on for a minute…
Medicare does cover medically necessary dermatology services. So if you notice anything unusual—like a new mole, a spot that changes, or something that just doesn’t look right—it’s always a good idea to have it checked out.
Preventive care and being proactive is key. I always tell my clients: “If something doesn’t look right, let’s not wait.”
Don’t Forget Your OTC Benefits!
Here’s something many people don’t realize (and I love reminding my clients about this one!)…
If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you may have an over-the-counter (OTC) allowance that can help cover some of your summer essentials.
Depending on your plan, you may be able to use those dollars toward items like:
- Sunscreen

- Aloe vera gel
- Moisturizers
- Lip balm with SPF
- First aid supplies for those little summer mishaps
These benefits are there for a reason—so don’t let them go to waste!
A Friendly Reminder
Summer is meant to be enjoyed. Whether you’re spending time with family, gardening, walking, or just relaxing outside with a good cup of coffee—take a few extra steps to protect your skin while you’re at it.
And if you’re not sure what your plan includes, or you want help understanding your benefits (including those OTC allowances), I’m always here to help.
No pressure, no obligation—just good, honest guidance.
Here’s to a safe, sunny, and healthy summer!
