Sun Shiny Days After 55 – How to Protect Your Skin (and Your Scalp!) This Summer

Summer is here, and with it comes backyard cookouts, farmers markets, poolside lounging, and all those glorious hours spent soaking in the sunshine. But before you grab your lawn chair and iced tea, let’s have a little heart-to-heart about something serious: skin cancer.

It may not be the most exciting summer topic—but it’s one of the most important.

🌞 Why Skin Cancer Awareness Matters More as We Age

Here’s a reality check: Over 5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, and the risk increases with age. That’s because the sun damage you accumulated in your teens, 20s, 30s, (remember how we used to slather on the suntan oil and lay on the silver tanning mats?😮) and beyond doesn’t just vanish with time—it builds up.

Even if you’ve been careful the past few years, the damage from years of gardening, beach vacations, and mowing the lawn shirtless can catch up to you. (Yes, we’re looking at you, gentlemen who insisted you didn’t need sunscreen.)

👵👴 Mature Skin Needs Extra TLC

As we age, our skin becomes thinner, drier, and less able to repair itself from damage—like that caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Seniors are also more likely to develop actinic keratoses—precancerous patches that can turn into squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated.

And let’s not forget: detecting skin cancer early is key. While melanoma is less common, it’s more dangerous, and it can spread quickly if not caught in time.

So let’s talk about what you can do right now to protect your skin.

🧴 Sunscreen Isn’t Just a Beach Thing—It’s a Daily Essential

Let’s get one thing straight: sunscreen isn’t a “once-a-year-on-vacation” product. It’s an every single day product—yes, even when it’s cloudy, and even if you’re “just running errands.”

Here’s how to make it work:

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. “Broad-spectrum” means it protects against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.
  • Apply it generously—about a shot glass full for your body—and reapply every two hours if you’re outside, sweating, or swimming.
  • Don’t forget often-missed areas: ears, neck, chest, tops of feet, and the backs of your hands.

And now for the fun part…

Gentlemen, if your hair has been on the retreat, so should your excuses. Thinning hair is not a free pass to skip sunscreen. Your scalp is a sunburn waiting to happen. Lather up, or better yet—grab a baseball cap or wide-brimmed hat. Not only will you protect that shiny dome, but you’ll look dashing while doing it. Trust us.

👒 Dress for Sun Success

  • Lightweight long sleeves and UPF-rated clothing can help block UV rays while keeping you cool.
  • Wear UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes and prevent cataracts.
  • Pick a wide-brimmed hat to cover your face, ears, and neck—or if you’re a guy with a proud bald head, this doubles as sun armor.

🕒 Time It Right: Avoid Peak Sun Hours

The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, plan your outdoor activities for early morning or later in the day. That doesn’t mean you have to become a vampire—it just means being smart with your timing.

💧 Hydrate for Healthy Skin

Skin isn’t just what we put on it—it’s also about what we put in our bodies. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. Dehydrated skin is more prone to damage and aging.

👩‍⚕️ Don’t Skip Annual Skin Checks

Seeing a dermatologist at least once a year is just as important as your eye or heart check-ups. If your doctor thinks a skin check is medically necessary, Medicare will cover it.

And if you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you might even have extra perks like wellness programs or free preventive screenings that include dermatology benefits. Not sure what your plan includes? That’s where I come in. I’m happy to walk you through your options.

🩺 What to Watch For

When it comes to your skin, early detection saves lives. Look for:

  • New moles or spots
  • Changes in existing moles
  • Sores that don’t heal
  • Scaly, crusty patches
  • Red, irritated areas that bleed or itch

If something doesn’t seem right—get it checked. Better safe than sorry.

🌻 The Bottom Line

You’ve earned the right to enjoy summer—but let’s do it safely. A little sun protection now can prevent a whole lot of trouble later. So grab that SPF, throw on your sun hat, and keep enjoying the great outdoors—smartly.

And if you have questions about what your Medicare plan covers when it comes to dermatology, skin cancer screenings, or preventive care, I’d love to help.
