Medicare Advantage Grocery and Healthy Food Benefits in 2027

What these benefits may cover, who may qualify, and what to verify before choosing a plan

You may have seen advertisements suggesting that Medicare Advantage plans provide money for groceries or healthy foods. While some plans may offer this benefit in 2027, it is important to understand that it is not included with every Medicare Advantage plan – and not everyone enrolled in a qualifying plan will necessarily be eligible.

How Do Grocery Benefits Work?

Some Medicare Advantage plans offer a healthy-food or grocery allowance as an extra benefit. Depending on the plan, the allowance may be provided monthly or quarterly through a prepaid benefit card. The benefit may be limited to approved foods, such as:

  • Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables
  • Meat, poultry, and fish
  • Dairy products
  • Bread, cereal, and other pantry staples
  • Certain beverages and nutritional products

Alcohol, tobacco, candy, prepared restaurant meals, and other non-approved items are generally excluded. For 2027, Medicare Advantage benefit cards must be electronically connected to the products covered by the plan. This allows eligibility and approved purchases to be verified at checkout. Benefit cards are also limited to the specific plan year.

Who Qualifies?

Eligibility depends on the individual plan. Some grocery benefits may be offered through a Special Needs Plan or as a Special Supplemental Benefit for the Chronically Ill, commonly called an SSBCI benefit. To qualify for an SSBCI benefit, a person must generally have an eligible chronic condition and meet the plan’s additional eligibility requirements. Simply having Medicare, Medicaid, diabetes, heart disease, or another health condition does not automatically guarantee eligibility. Beginning in 2027, Medicare Advantage plans must make their plan-specific SSBCI eligibility criteria publicly available. This should help people better understand who may qualify before enrolling.

Is This the Same as an Over-the-Counter Allowance?

Not necessarily. A plan may provide an allowance for over-the-counter health products, healthy foods, or a combination of eligible items. The amount, approved products, participating retailers, and rules for using the benefit can differ from one plan to another. Some unused funds may expire at the end of the month or quarter rather than carrying over. Always review the plan’s specific rules.

Do Not Select a Plan Based Only on the Grocery Benefit

A grocery allowance can be helpful, but it should not be the main reason you select a Medicare Advantage plan. Before enrolling, it is also important to review:

  • Your doctors and preferred hospitals
  • Your prescription medications
  • Premiums, copays, and deductibles
  • The plan’s maximum out-of-pocket limit
  • Prior-authorization requirements
  • Dental, vision, hearing, transportation, and other benefits
  • Whether you qualify for the advertised grocery benefit

A plan offering a larger grocery allowance may have other costs or restrictions that make it less suitable for your healthcare needs.

What Should You Expect for 2027?

Medicare Advantage plans can change their benefits and eligibility requirements each year. Complete 2027 plan information should be reviewed once it becomes available for Annual Enrollment, which runs from October 15 through December 7. Before making a decision, verify the grocery benefit directly with the plan and review the plan’s official documents. Do not rely solely on a television commercial, postcard, online advertisement, or the amount printed on a benefit card. At Mindful Medicare Solutions, I help you look beyond the advertised extras and consider the entire plan – including your healthcare providers, prescriptions, expected costs, and individual priorities. This information is educational only. Benefits, eligibility requirements, covered items, and availability vary by plan and service area.
